Given that true intellectual and emotional compatibility
Are at the very least difficult
If not impossible to come by
We could always opt for the more temporal gratification
Of sheer physical attraction
That wouldn't make you a shallow person
Would it? lyrics ~ Here I Am by Lyle Lovett
MOST OF THE TIME, WHEN VIEWING (fine) ART, I end up feeling like a shallow person. That’s cuz, when viewing any Fine Art, what I seek is the sensation I experience when my visual sensibilities are pricked by what I see. And, to be precise, what I see first and foremost is the pattern / structure / form to be perceived in a work of art. Or, simply written, what it looks like–a purely visual sensation.
Concept, meaning, technique, authorship, et al simply do not interest me when viewing art. Which is not to write that I can not hold my ground in a conversation about those elements. However, doing so seems like a gutting-the-fish kinda thing–not only sucking the life out of it but it’s no longer a fish.
So, one could assume, reasonably accurately, that all I am interested in is the temporal gratification of sheer physical attraction / pleasure to be had from the simple act of looking at art.
That doesn’t make me a shallow person, does it?
